Your YOGA is just around the corner….

What is yoga?

Yoga is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with Derbyshire hosting one of the highest populations of Yoga teachers. The Sanskrit word ‘Yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ which means ‘to join’, commonly interpreted as the joining of the mind, the body and the soul. Yoga originated in India and goes back thousands of years. Modern Yoga as we know it today, however, originated in south India in the early 20th century, a creation of Indian Servant ‘Krishnamacharya’, whose influence brought about many forms of Yoga, including ‘Vinyasa Flow’. Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word for a phrase that roughly translates as ‘to place in a special way’. It is a more fluid and dynamic form of Yoga practice that takes the discipline of traditional Yoga such as Hatha and Ashtanga, and sequences the asanas (postures) to form a continuous sequence. Often practiced to music, Vinyasa Flow classes can be challenging, however modifications are always given so that classes are accessible for everyone – including complete beginners!
