Choir’s singing success

Tideswell Singers’ Come & Sing Mozart Requiem on Saturday 18 April was an amazing occasion. The choir has now hosted four of these events and obviously built a reputation for producing a day which combines a high standard of music making with a congenial atmosphere. Musical Director Carol Bowns is supported by an enthusiastic team who organise the bookings, refreshments, finances and make the visiting singers welcome, so that we get people saying “a huge ‘thank you’ to you and all Tideswell Singers for a wonderful day yesterday – a lovely singing day, and excellent hospitality & organisation.”

The choir was joined by The University of Sheffield Chamber Orchestra whose contribution throughout the day inspired the singers. Their conductor, Tim Shephard, led one of the workshop sessions, giving the singers insight into how the orchestra and choir work together. The evening performance, which attracted a large audience, started with Mozart’s oboe concerto, with sublime playing by soloist, Manuel Perez Estelles. Mozart specialist Prof. Simon Keefe then gave a short talk about the myths and legends that surround Mozart’s last composition before a performance of the work itself. “The volume and quality of sound was unforgettable.” Four stunning soloists from the University of Sheffield and Birmingham Conservatoire contributed to “a most moving experience.” “It was one of my most memorable singing experiences ever.” These comments came from both audience and participants, so it is fortunate that Tideswell Singers have already booked the church for next year’s event 16 April 2016!

Before then the choir will be active with other smaller events. Listen out for us at Tideswell Food Festival Saturday 2 May and in Headstone Tunnel on the Monsal Trail to great L’Eroica cyclists.

Tideswell Singers also extend an invitation to come along and find out if you would like to join us as a regular singer. There are no auditions and rehearsals are directed in a way that encourages everyone to sing to the best of their ability. Singers need no previous experience and although we generally sing from music scores, it is not necessary to be able to read music as you will be able to learn as you go along. Rehearsals are 7:30pm Wednesday evenings in Litton Village Hall.
