March is a busy month at Tideswell Cinema Live, with three classic plays, an opera, a ballet and a concert, all upstairs at the George Inn.

We begin with opera, Bizet’s Carmen, live from the Royal Opera House on Tue Mar 6 at 6.45pm.  Australian director Barrie Kosky updates the story of seduction, jealousy and passion surrounding the fiery gypsy Carmen, incorporating rarely-heard music from Bizet’s original score.

On Tue Mar 13 at 7pm we have Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams’ steamy drama, with Sienna Miller and Jack O’Connell as a couple whose marriage is falling apart. This Young Vic production was recorded live at London’s Apollo Theatre last autumn, and includes nude shower scenes.

On Tue Mar 20 at 7.15pm, we have Lady Windermere’s Fan, part of the Oscar Wilde season live from the Vaudeville Theatre, London. Directed by comedian Kathy Burke, with Jennifer Saunders leading a sparky cast, Wilde’s witty send-up of a Victorian melodrama still has modern relevance.

Our third play on Thur Mar 22 at 7pm, is Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, live from London’s Bridge Theatre. The top-rank cast of Ben Whishaw (Brutus), David Morrissey (Mark Antony) and David Calder (Caesar), have won critical acclaim. Director Nicholas Hytner demonstrates the brand-new theatre’s flexibility as the audience mingles with the actors in modern dress (includes strobe lighting and no interval).

Our dance event, on Tue Mar 27 at 7.15pm, is the Royal Ballet’s Bernstein Centenary celebration, live from the Royal Opera House. Choreographers Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon celebrate the American composer whose most popular works include West Side Story.

Finally, as Easter approaches, we present The Messiah, on Wed Mar 28 at 7pm. This dramatized concert, recorded at the Bristol Old Vic, features the English Concert Orchestra and the Erebus Ensemble in Handel’s profound religious masterpiece.

Carmen, the Bernstein Centenary and The Messiah are £15 (£12.50 concessions). Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Lady Windermere’s Fan and Julius Caesar are £10 (under-19s £7.50).
