A ballet that probes one of the great historical mysteries of the 20th century comes live to Tideswell Cinema from the Royal Opera House on Wednesday Nov 2 at 7.15pm.‘Anastasia’focuses on the woman said to be the only surviving member of the Russian royal family after their execution by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Apparently the Grand Duchess Anastasia could not remember her past; shunned as an imposter shebecame known as Anna Anderson. ‘Anastasia’was one of Kenneth MacMillan’s first creations after becoming director of the Royal Ballet in 1970, featuring music by Tchaikovsky and Martinu.

Then on Tue Nov 15 at 6.15pm we present ‘Les Contes d’Hoffman’ (Tales of Hoffman), live from the Royal Opera House. This production of Offenbach’s fantastical operawas originally created by Academy Award-winning film director John Schlesinger. Renowned storyteller Hoffman is goaded into drunkenly telling the tales of his three great loves, each destroyed by a villainous rival. With clockwork dolls, magical glasses, ghostly voices and sensual courtesans, this is a feast for all the senses. Baritone Thomas Hampson stars along with Vittorio Grigolo, Sofia Fomina and Sonya Yoncheva (who starred recently in Norma).
