September is a bumper month for Tideswell Cinema Live, with no fewer than five productionsstreaming in from London, Stratford and even Australia. First is TheDeep Blue Sea, Terence Rattigan’s 1950s masterpiece, starring Helen McCrory as a woman torn between a tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot, and her marriage to a High Court judge. Live from the National Theatreon Thur Sept 1 at 7pm, it is fully booked but you can try for cancellations.

Then on Thur Sept 15 at 7pm we have Turandot,Puccini’s romantic opera, from Opera Australia. Performed on anoutdoor stage in SydneyHarbour, it features spectacular fireworks, lavish costumes, a 60-metre fire-breathing dragon whose tail morphs into the Great Wall of China, and the famous aria Nessun Dorma.

Next, on Thur Sept 22 at 7pm, is another National Theatre Live offering: The Threepenny Opera, by Bertolt Brecht andKurt Weill, a darkly comic musical starring Rory Kinnear as Mack the Knife,with Haydn Gwynne. Set in low-life London in the run-up to the coronation, thethieves and whores are rattled when a daughter goes missing. Expect scenes ofsex, violence and swearing.

On Mon Sept 26 at 7.15pm we’re back to serious opera with a brand new production of Bellini’s 1830s tragic masterpiece Norma, live from the Royal Opera House. Set in a contemporary civil war, Normaagonises over leading a rebellion against an occupying force – whose leader is her former lover and father of her children. Finally, on Wed Sept 28 at 7pm, we welcome the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Cymbeline, live from Stratford. Grief-stricken Queen Cymbeline, ruling over a divided Britain, alienates her only daughter. In a plot encompassing family breakdown, treachery, suspicion, jealousy and murder, Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance ends in reconciliation and love.
