Two great films this month, with our regular, scheduled programme, plus our special OSCARS NIGHT, featuring one of the nominated Academy Award films. On Thursday 18th, we are showing ‘Le Havre’, a topical comedy drama about a young African boy who arrives in the French port hidden in a shipping container. He aims to reach Britain and start a new life, and along the way strikes up a friendship with a well-spoken, bohemian shoe shiner called Marcel Max. Described as a ‘warmhearted portrait of the French harbour city’ it is likened to ‘a political fairy tale’, ‘a charming, deadpan delight’ (Rotten Tomatoes).

This is one of our foreign language choices, a Finnish film made in French (with subtitles). It will be shown at 7.30pm upstairs in The George. All are welcome, with guest membership for the evening (£4).

OSCARS NIGHT: Monday 29th February, 7.30pm – the night after the awards are given. We have chosen a film that has been nominated in both the Best Film and Best Actor categories, and the one that won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – The Martian. Starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, this sci fi film is described as ‘smart, thrilling and surprisingly funny’. During a manned mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But they are wrong, and we follow Watney’s Robinson Crusoe-like determination to survive. We watch as the world comes together to root for his safe return to earth.

The film will be shown in The George, and as with all our films is open to anyone who would like to come (guest membership £4). For further information about Tideswell Cinema, visit our website www.tideswellcinema.com.
