No need to go to London – world-class live and recorded theatrical productions are brought to your doorstep every month thanks to Tideswell Cinema at the George Inn.

April’s treats include:

Wed April 1 at 7.15pm: The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny live from the Royal Opera House. You may be just in time to catch renowned bass-baritone Willard White in this rarely-produced opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. The story features three criminals who found a city – Mahagonny, city of gold – which attracts the destitute and disenchanted.

Sun April 12 at 7pm: Hamlet – an opportunity to see last year’s sell-out Royal Exchange production of Shakespeare’s tragedy with many parts played by females – Maxine Peake stars in the title role. You may want to refresh your memory of the play before Tideswell Community Players’ next production, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (May 21-23 in St John’s Parish Church), in which two minor characters from Hamlet try to work out where they fit in to the mighty plot – with much humour and spectacle on the way.

Thur April 16 at 7pm: A Hard Problem – Tom Stoppard’s new play live from the National Theatre, in which he explores “the hard problem” of consciousness – where is it, what is it, is it indivisible from the brain? Starring Olivia Vinall, who was a riveting Desdemona in last year’s NT production of Othello, and Damien Molony.

Thur April 23 at 7pm: Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, starring the award-winning Mark Strong, produced by the Young Vic. Nominated for seven Olivier Awards, this tragic masterpiece set in Brooklyn’s Italian community was said by the Times to be “one of the great theatrical productions of the decade. See it.”

Finally, coming up in May, a treat for ballet fans – a live broadcast of the Royal Ballet’s La Fille Mal Gardee on Tue May 5.

Plays are £10, opera/ballet £15 (£12.50 concessions). Book through tideswellcinema@gmail.com or 01298 872993. Cheques (to Tideswell Cinema) may be left at Tideswell Stores or posted to Tideswell Cinema, c/o 1 Manchester Rd, Tideswell, SK17 8LL. Please write name/date of production on back of cheque.
