Tideswell Cinema’s live broadcasts provide a lively start to the New Year with ballet from the Royal Opera House and a theatrical treat from the Donmar Warehouse.

The Royal Ballet presents Rhapsody and Two Pigeons on Tue Jan 26 at 7.15pm. This delightful Frederick Ashton double bill opens with his setting of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, using the music’s dark turbulence to inspire some of his most thrilling choreography. The second half features Ashton’s delicate, comic The Two Pigeons – a work rarely performed and a real treat for ballet fans.

Then on Thur Jan 28 at 7pm National Theatre Live broadcasts from the Donmar, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, an award-winning adaptation of an 18th-century French novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France.

Starring Dominic West and Janet McTeer, the play is directed by Josie Rourke. This revival marks the 30th anniversary of Christopher Hampton’s adaptation which won the Olivier and Evening Standard awards for Best Play in 1985.

The ballet is £15 (concessions £12.50), the play £10 (£7.50 for young people under 19).
