Parish Council Crisis

As a highlight of the year, The Parish Council Annual Meeting never rates in the top ten but this year’s meeting proved to be rather unusual.

Set for the 13th of May, it was cancelled as the strict rules for publicising the event had not been adhered to. The subsequently re-advertised meeting was also abandoned after the resignation of the Chairman and four of his fellow councillors. The remaining four councillors (Sue Barber, who as Vice-chairman assumed the chair, Jen Bower, Sue Willis and Mary Landon) means the council is quorate but as one councillor was on holiday for the rearranged meeting, it couldn’t take place either.

A further complication arose, in that the Clerk to the Council is now on long-term sick leave from her post with the council.

In the interim, Chairman Sue Barber is asking that anyone who wishes to make contact with the council should direct correspondence through her ( or 01298 871644. Address – Glen Eldon, Parke Rd, Tideswell, SK17 8NS).

The former chair, Philip Swarbrick has undertaken to remain as contact for anyone wishing to arrange funerals at Tideswell Cemetery. His details are posted on the Parish Council notice board on the Coop wall).

New Councillors Wanted The parish council urgently needs to fill the six vacant slots. Councillors work on a voluntary basis, meeting once each month for a general meeting. They may represent the council on a variety of bodies and charities. It is a rewarding way of helping to influence the future of Tideswell.

Public spirited people are plentiful in Tideswell, as the various articles in Village Voice each month prove. Anyone who is over 21 years of age and living within Tideswell Parish is eligible.

Anyone interested in becoming a councillor should put their name forward in writing in the first instance to Sue. The closing date to register your interest is Friday 5th July 2013.

There is a set procedure for electing or co-opting members, which will be adhered to strictly. Interested individuals will be invited to a meeting of the council and asked to speak for a couple of minutes.

Details of this meeting to co-opt new Councillors depends on a quorate council being present which will be either 8th or 22nd July depending on the holiday commitments of the current councillors.

Details will be posted on the notice board when available and sent to those people who have so far expressed an interest.

Full training can be given to those who wish to become councillors which will be provided free by the Derbyshire Association of Local Councils.

The next parish council meeting will be held on Monday 1st July at 7.15 p.m. in the Vestry, Fountain Square Church. Members of the public wishing to present to the council may use the ten minute public slot at the start of the meeting.
