Francine’s funeral took place on 27 October, with theservice at the church of St John the Baptist. Francine had lived for a number of years on Sherwood Road, and took on delivery of the Village Voice around the Pinfold. This is a round taking in 90 houses, most of which are approached by steps. There must be at least 200 steps, which in winter can be icy and covered in snow. Francine was small and slight, but she told me the round was fine and that she enjoyed doing it.

I enjoyed having a chat with her once a month, and was sad when she fell ill and had to give up the deliveries. It seemed that she had overcome the cancer that afflicted her, but it was not to be.

Tideswell attracts some admirable people. May she rest in peace.
