This month’s Tideswell Cinema film, to be shown on Thursday 25th, is a powerful story of a young five year old boy from a happy rural family in India who becomes lost in Calcutta. Eventually he is adopted by a loving Australian couple and grows up in Tasmania, but he is haunted by memories of his early life. After 25 years he sets out to find his lost family. ‘LION’ is a true story, and stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. It received six nominations including Best Film at the 2017
Academy Awards. The film will be shown at 7.30 p.m. upstairs in the George, and Guest members are welcome to come (tickets £4).

Earlier in the month, on Saturday 13th January, we have one of our popular Double Bills and meal at the George. Starting at 4pm, we are ‘travelling’ to Venice for the 1970s film ‘Death in Venice’ starring Dirk Bogarde in a movng portrayal of frail and tortured composer Gustave Aschenbach, loosely based on Mahler. After dinner we will see the atmospheric thriller ‘Don’t Look Now’, with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland – also set in Venice. It is important to pre-book for this event, as food is ordered in advance. Full details and booking form are on Tideswell Cinema’s website,, or phone Margaret on 01298 871681.
