Community Kitchen Garden

I thought that the season would be nearly over when we got to October but this month has been really busy.

At the beginning of October we were pleased to be part of the Harvest Festival in St John’s Church. We were able to fill the porch with produce, including a harvest of late strawberries as well as a lovely crop of pumpkins and squashes. A basket of the garden produce then became part of the raffle at the Harvest Supper.

One of the pumpkins went to the Tideswell Nursery School as the children planted the seeds way back in May, and one is to be used as part of the soup to be served at the 2 November Bonfire. A third pumpkin went all the way to London along with another basket of our garden produce as part of the Taste Tideswell Display at a BIG Lottery Event. And then on 19 October we had a stall at the Tideswell Surgery Open Day and were still able to harvest more produce from the garden: runner beans, leeks, chard, spinach, squash and herbs. Again, a basket of produce was one of the raffle prizes.

As the beds begin to clear, we’ve started digging over and planting green manure seeds and using our compost in preparation for another good season next year: we’re trying to get as much done before winter arrives. If you would like to become involved in any way with the garden please call Maureen (871542) or Judy (872408).
