After their well-deserved summer break, Tideswell Singers’ rehearsals start again Wednesday 2 September at 7:30 in Litton Village Hall. They are embarking on an ambitious project to perform The Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. It will also be one of the main events in Classical Sheffield Festival of Music, 23-25 October. Tideswell Singers are thrilled to be part of this inspiring weekend of music making in Sheffield. They will joining Hallam Choral Society and Hallam Sinfonia – prominent organisations on the Sheffield music scene. Tideswell Singers established a connection with them in 2013 for a concert celebrating the Benjamin Britten centenary.

Collaborating with organisations such as these, gives Tideswell Singers the opportunity to perform large scale works in venues for which they do not have adequate forces on their own. It also means they can rise to the challenge of learning unusual repertoire. The Chichester Psalms were commissioned in 1965 so the performance in Sheffield Cathedral on 24 October will mark its 50th anniversary. Leonard Bernstein chose to set words from six psalms in three movements in Hebrew, the middle one including a lyrical treble solo which will be sung by a chorister from Sheffield Cathedral. The outer movements are very rhythmic, making full use of orchestral percussion.

Tideswell Singers will also continue to develop the choir’s varied repertoire for local performances such as with Litton School in Litton Church 6pm Friday 13 November and we have been invited back to Eroica Britannia, Sunday 19 June 2016! As always,

Tideswell Singers extend an invitation to come along and find out if you would like to join us as a regular singer. Do please call Carol Bowns on 01298 213577 if you would like to chat about singing with us. There are no auditions and rehearsals are directed in a way that encourages everyone to sing to the best of their ability. Singers need no previous experience and although we generally sing from music scores, it is not necessary to be able to read music as you will be able to learn as you go along.
